Bench test setup

2.Use fully‑rated charged battery(12 V/24 V match starter rating),heavy‑gauge test leads,non‑contact optical tachometer,high‑speed camera(optional for precise timing).
3.Connect main battery positive to large starter terminal,housing to battery negative ground.
4.Power the motor briefly;observe pinion travel while measuring armature RPM.Keep each test≤5 seconds to avoid over‑heating windings.

Common faults revealed by engagement‑speed test
1.Engagement RPM too high:Bendix will spin fast before gear pops out,causes grinding,top‑teeth clashing against flywheel ring‑gear.Caused by sticky splines,hardened old grease,dirt and corrosion.
2.Engagement RPM too low:pinion creeps out at very low speed;risk of partial mesh,dragging after engine fires.Usually damaged return spring.
3.No outward movement at all:Bendix seized on screw splines,must replace Bendix drive assembly.
Limitations
1.This bench test measures only pinion‑out RPM.Itcannot test overrunning‑clutch slip torque.Clutch slip can only show under real load against flywheel ring‑gear.
2.Real‑world cold conditions thicken internal grease;bench warm‑test results may differ from cold‑machine performance.
3.Pre‑engaged starters(solenoid pushes pinion before motor spins)have no“Bendix engagement speed”parameter;you test solenoid pull‑in voltage and travel time instead.
Quick manual preliminary check
With starter unpowered,push Bendix pinion by hand along splines.It should slide freely,spring back immediately.If sticky,clean screw splines and apply high‑temperature low‑viscosity Bendix‑spec grease before doing RPM test.
