How to store spare starter motor for long time?

Spare starter motors stored for months or years can suffer from moisture‑induced corrosion,grease degradation,terminal rust and spline seizure,even if brand‑new.Correct storage preserves shelf‑life so it works when needed.

Pre‑storage preparation

1.Fully clean the starter:remove dust,oil,grease,dirt from housing,pinion‑bendix splines and solenoid terminals.Make sure unit is completely dry before storage.Oil residue will attract moisture over time.

2.Treat exposed machined pinion splines and gear teeth with thin‑film anti‑rust agent/anti‑corrosion grease.Do not over‑grease;excess grease attracts dust.

3.Apply dielectric grease thinly on solenoid metal studs to prevent terminal corrosion.

4.Seal open openings:loosely cover pinion‑end opening and solenoid area.**Do NOT use air‑tight sealed plastic bag**,plastic traps condensation inside and causes internal rust.Use breathable dust‑cover or anti‑rust paper instead.

5.Place silica‑gel desiccant packet alongside the starter inside storage container to absorb ambient moisture.

Storage environment requirements

1.Store indoors,cool,dry,well‑ventilated workshop/warehouse.Ideal temperature:**10‑25°C**,relative humidity**below 60%**.

2.Keep starter elevated on pallet or shelf;never sit directly on concrete floor,concrete wicks ground moisture into housing.

3.Keep away from heat sources,direct sunlight,chemical vapors,fertilizer,dust and workshop vibration.Vibration can damage internal brush assemblies.

4.Do not store outdoors;dew,rain and temperature swings will quickly ruin spare starter.

Position&periodic maintenance for long‑term stock

1.Store in horizontal orientation,support by housing,do not hang by terminals or pinion shaft to avoid internal stress.

2.Every**30‑60 days**:manually rotate pinion/armature shaft several full turns.This redistributes internal gear‑reduction grease,prevents spline seizure and bearing brinelling from static sitting.

3.Inspect for rust,check desiccant condition.Log inspection date.

4.Protect from rodents;small animals can chew wiring and nest inside starter housing.

Attach clear tag:part‑number,voltage(12V/24V),storage‑in date.Avoid mixing‑up spare units.

Before installing stored starter

1.Visually inspect splines,pinion teeth,terminals for rust or contamination.

3.Perform bench no‑load short test(5‑10 seconds only)to confirm solenoid pull‑in and motor spin before fitting to machine.
